There is always that age old question when working with artwork in interiors – do you select for the space or for what speaks to you? I try to accomplish both but it often is a challenge finding that perfect balance between the two.

I'm working with a client right now to select artwork for above the writing desk we selected from CTH Sherrill. The desk lamp we selected is from Currey & Company – one of my favorite "go to's" for lighting. The chair is still on order but the fabrics we chose are absolutely gorgeous and cannot wait to see it all pulled together!

Given the color palette and the reflective finish on the desk, I wanted to find artwork that had a softer, lighter feel but at the same time would make a statement and stand on its own against the mirrored desk. And yes, the budget is key.

I found some antique coral prints on Etsy from Vintage by the Shore. They are 8.5 x 11 in size so it should be fairly easy to find a ready-made frame. And, with each print at only $14 each, we can really create something that will have a lot of impact for not a lot of money.

Something about them immediately spoke to me so I got busy playing around with an arrangement for above their desk.  I think it was the vintage feel, the wispiness of the coral and I just loved the muted red against her blue walls.  Plus in researching further, I learned coral symbolizes rebirth and health – so love that!

The color is definitely unexpected and I know I'm going outside her comfort zone here so I told her to sit with this picture for a few days before getting back to me. So often that's all that's needed to get comfortable with a new idea. The palette right now is calm blues, grays and beiges so this pop of red will introduce a pop of a bolder color without it overwhelming the space. I'll keep you posted and let you know where we end up J.
